2023 Grand Marshal
One day while at work I noticed Del Larson walking around in the apparatus bays in his turnouts and wearing an air pack. Not the mask, just the pack. I asked him what he was up to. Del informed me that he had a serious claustrophobic issue when using the air pack. He had started with just the turnouts, then I discovered him with the backpack. He planned to add on components in various stages each day or week until he could wear the whole pack and be on air while he walked around in the bays. Later he would tackle performing work in the apparatus. I never got to see his further development, but was pleased to hear later that he had become an officer. I always admired Del's desire and tenacity in overcoming his challenge.
